Cleaning Polishing Laps

Restoring used, worn laps help us to keep costs down when making more laps.

We’ve been seeing a number of returned laps without the love they could have had while in the user’s possession.

An effort should be made to effect proper cleaning and storage after every use. A clean lap helps to prevent unwanted scratches while polishing gemstones.

CLEAN: Clean laps promote longer usage. Please download and read especially these two documents. "Instructions" and Slow-scratchy laps", found on our site under guides and reference

VIDEO: There is also a video of cleaning the BEAST polish from a Natural lap. Alcohol is used for the NAT laps especially if oils have been used on your lap. The Bon Ami or similar kitchen cleanser is used on ALL of the Lightning Laps after each use.

MAINTAIN; It's easy to clean and maintain them, front and back, using kitchen cleanser and a 3M scouring pad at the sink. Rinse with plenty of clean water, and wipe to dry.

MOUNTING: When mounting Toppers on a Master lap both laps should be clean and free from contamination insuring there will be no transfer of ground-in crud or platen oxides to transfer to the backs of your laps.

WAX: We have also found, that treating metal and aluminum Platens and Master laps with several layers of auto paste wax is useful. Use paste wax with strong Carnauba content. Dry and buff between coats. This will prevent oxidation which can easily transfer to the backs of any lap.

STORE: Storing your laps is also an important act to follow after the cleaning. Any kind of dish rack will do. Place the cleaned laps in the rack to allow them to dry after cleansing. Never lay one lap upon another!!! They should always be kept separate!

Hope this info is helpful. Clean replacement laps will ship ASAP after receipt of your old laps.

Thanks
